Every human being carries an incomplete atlas of the world.
Geography, identity, culture, history, and beauty shape it. Growing from the places we inhabit, the stories we inherit, the people we love, the work we pursue, and the memories we keep or lose.
No single discipline, profession, culture, or tradition can reveal the entire landscape. Every perspective offers only part of the terrain.
The Human Atlas Institute brings together people whose lives and ways of thinking rarely intersect — in a place that is not background but active participant — to discover the edges of the map they already carry.
The people change with every session. The theme changes. The conversation that emerges is unrepeatable.

Meeting here as equals in shared investigation — not around a shared profession, but a shared quality: the willingness to be genuinely changed by an encounter with an unfamiliar mind.

Not subjects to be taught — fields of perception to be examined together.
Geography shapes who you are or become. Identity is the result — and that identity grows from the culture you were brought into. Culture is itself a product of history. What emanates from that history, what a place has decided is worth honoring, defines beauty.
Where you are shapes what you see before you speak a word.
Who you are when the roles you carry are set aside.
The invisible agreements you live inside — and what happens outside them.
What can only be understood by looking backward. What is ours to continue.
Not decoration. A standard for what a life, a practice, a civilization can aspire to.

Vence is not backdrop. It is the fourth participant in every conversation.
A medieval village in the hills above the Côte d'Azur, continuously inhabited for over two thousand years. Beneath its cathedral, Roman foundations are still being excavated. Matisse came here to die and instead made the chapel that became his life's masterpiece.
The place hasn't changed in essence. Like meeting someone you haven't seen in twenty years — they've changed, you've changed, but the heart didn't change. That is what Vence is.

The answers we collect shape a person's life less than the questions we continue to ask. Our work is to expand how we see — so we can move through the world with greater understanding, imagination, and care.
It begins where the edges of the map become visible.
What Matters, NOW?
The inaugural gathering of The Human Atlas Institute.
Over four days, twelve people will let happen what happens. No agenda imposed on the morning — if the conversation requires a walk into the village, a walk into the mountains, or sitting in the grounds with an open question, that is what will happen.
The theme is open enough for each person to define on their own terms. What Matters, NOW? Not yesterday, not tomorrow. Now.

I have spent thirty-five years navigating the space where culture, media, and identity collide — as Billboard Magazine's first foreign bureau chief in Tokyo, as the first foreign DJ on FM Tokyo, as a ghostwriter and narrative architect for founders and executives on three continents.
The Human Atlas Institute grew out of two books. The first took me to Hydra, Greece, where I had gone to write poetry and instead discovered five pillars — geography, identity, culture, history, and beauty — forming the invisible architecture of every human life. The second brought me back to Vence, a village in the south of France where I had lived for a year in the 1990s.
Returning in 2026 after twenty years, I wanted to find out whether the place loved me as much as I loved it. It did. And the Institute was born.
Not setting out to build an institute — I set out to understand what a place does to a person, what it reveals that could not have been seen anywhere else. What I discovered is that the conversation which changes how you see everything requires a room that has never existed before.
This is that room.
